Within this collaboration, methods for aerosol characterization from ground-based radiometry were developed and we showed that qualitatively new information can only be obtained in the synergy of sky photometer measurements and optical monitoring of the lower troposphere. We designed a complementary experimental setup for quantification of the light field in the night environment (Fig. below). By inversion (I) of radiometric data, we obtain input to theories (T) and subsequently numerical predictions of the night sky brightness (NSB) at locations (T1…Tn) where direct measurements (M) are absent. Radiometric data and the degree of polarization P measured along the vertical from zenith to horizon have proven to be the most comprehensive source of information on the emission function of a light source, while its spectral composition can be extracted from the diffuse sky light. Active optical scanning of a laser beam along its trajectory through the lower layers of the atmosphere is a source of information about the optical properties of the atmosphere (ATM), e.g. about the phase scattering function p(\u03b8) over a wide range of angles \u03b8.<\/p>\n
